I was chewing gum the first time I came to the mat – chewing gum!  Now knowing that breathing and moving in time with your breath is integral to the practice of yoga I can only shake my head and smile  - we all start out as beginners!  And thats ok  More than being ok its actually an important part of the process  When I first started practicing yoga I had to focus so hard on what the instructor was saying that I couldnt even begin to think about how I was breathing – or if I was breathing!  But after awhile I started to really hear what the instructor was telling us not just getting us into a pose but the more subtle suggestions - breathe through your nose relax your shoulders unclench your teeth  When I was finally able to incorporate all the subtleties when I finally unclenched my teeth and relaxed my shoulders and breathed through my nose I began to understand that yoga is so much more than a workout – its a way of life I never had any intention of becoming an instructor but as I discovered all the ways yoga was improving my quality of life I found myself wanting to know more about the poses and what each one accomplishes both physically and mentally  I became interested in the history and philosophy of yoga and was amazed to discover how each yogis journey is unique their practice being uniquely theirs  Before long I realized I wanted to share yoga with everyone! Yoga is a process it is a journey it is a practice that never expects perfection  And each step of the process teaches us something new  By engaging in a continuous practice we learn that there is always room for improvement but we also learn how to love and accept ourselves for who we are in this moment  And when we learn to love and accept ourselves we also learn to love and accept others.
