About
Caryn Sykes is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance, which acknowledges the completion of a yoga teacher training with an approved and active Registered Yoga School (RYS).
Caryn Ziegler was raised by her grandmother in the Tennessee Appalachian mountains. She discovered martial arts in her early twenties and studied for 8 years. Finding the subtle aspects of martial arts intriguing, Caryn decided to try yoga. She began her yoga path with international yoga teacher Lydie Ometto, whose soft, compassionate yoga teachings diminished the idea of punishing the body in order to achieve physical fitness. It is with yoga that Caryn found her love of the body and passion for the deeper work of connecting the body to the mind and the breath, and ultimately, the soul. Caryn graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, after which she began her brief career as a federal law enforcement officer. While in this field, Caryn developed a great compassion and understanding for the way humans shape their own lives. Too often she found individuals allowed stress and other emotional factors to control their lives while completely disconnecting with their physical selves. Caryn completed a 200 hour yoga certification with Iyengar teacher Cindy Dollar. She found the Iyengar alignment and heavy emphasis on the body to be an excellent practice of reconnecting the emotional body with the physical body. Upon getting married, Caryn decided to give up her law enforcement career and focus on bringing her passion to others. She moved to Utah to be with her husband and began a 1000 hour yoga certification program at D’ana Baptiste’s Inbody Academy. Throughout this program Caryn learned how to rely on her innate wisdom to improve her own practice, as well as improve her teaching practice. This innate wisdom is essential in moving the body safely and efficiently throughout everyday activities, and this is a wisdom that every human body contains but is often overshadowed by influences outside one’s own body. Caryn thoroughly enjoys watching her students rediscover their own wisdom through movement and play. She began sharing yoga at the Salt Lake Police Department and fell in love with this population of yogis. While expecting her first and only child, Caryn recently went back to TN to complete a 12 hour prenatal yoga certification with her teacher, Lydie. Caryn’s style of teaching takes aspects of all the different styles she has studied and integrates the alignment of the body with the meditative movement and fluidity of Vinyasa Flow and Tai Chi. She is excited to bring the life-changing joys and therapeutic benefits of yoga to anyone with whom she is fortunate enough to cross paths.
