About
“Dr.
Jo” is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been helping people change behaviors such as smoking, to recover from traumas ranging from combat experiences to natural disasters to domestic violence, and to move out of the grip of anxiety and depression towards a more meaningful life. Over the past ten years, they noticed that talking wasn’t enough and yearned for more tools to help clients. Dr. Jo had been practicing Hatha yoga for many years at home with those classic Rodney Yee videos, believing that since they didn’t look like a yogi in the magazines that they wouldn’t fit in at a yoga studio. Then they learned they had a spinal injury and fibromyalgia, and she figured that yoga was no longer an option. Their life shrunk to the size of the couch, consisting of sweatpants, popcorn, and fluffy British rom-com novels. One day a physician recommended looking into a different type of yoga that “is all about breathing.” The physician didn’t mention what the name of it was, so Dr. Jo decided to screw up their courage and try a class at Yoga Yoga. No one laughed, no one told them they she didn’t belong, and the teacher was very kind and helpful with modifications. So Dr. Jo went back. And back. And back. They were was able to breathe more freely. And decided to become a teacher so that they could give others the same experience. What Dr. Jo didn’t realize at the time was how their yoga teaching and their practice as a psychologist could come together to create a very powerful toolkit for well-being. Body, mind, breath, and the well-researched tools for behavior change can all be combined to provide a more holistic way of approaching issues. Through their personal yoga practice, they have found their own easing of past emotional wounds and a little more acceptance and love of their body. Now she loves helping people do things they didn’t think they could do, both on and off the mat! They also love helping people find ease and rest, so to that end they have trained in Relax and Renewtm restorative yoga with Judith Hansen Lasater and is pursuing Yoga Nidra training. They have also trained in chair yoga. In Dr. Jo’s classes, you’ll find a welcoming, compassionate, and safe environment, tidbits of wisdom, sweet meditations, long cosy shavasanas, and often dancing! They believe we’re all perfectly imperfect. Jo Eckler is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance, which acknowledges the completion of a yoga teacher training with an approved and active Registered Yoga School (RYS).
