About
Kara Keating was first introduced to Hatha yoga at age 12 by her father, then later attended an alternative high school where Iyengar yoga was a part of the curriculum.
A classically trained dancer, Kara holds a degree in dance and physical education from the University of Iowa (1980). In 1996 she experienced vinyasa yoga at a health spa in Mexico. After her foundational training in Iyengar yoga, it felt like a perfect blend of movement and breath, a yoga that was closer to dance. Kara opened Movement Arts studio in 1998, in a reconditioned barn. The studio eventually moved to Camano Island, Washington. Kara's yoga study has included renowned teachers such as Douglas Keller, Rod Stryker, Richard Freeman, Angela Farmer, and Judith Lasater. Currently she most appreciates continued study with Douglas Keller and other teachers of the tantric tradition. Kara was profiled in the magazine Real Simple in 2002, and has been a featured speaker and group leader for retreats and other events, She produced the Yoga at Home video in 2008. In 2013 she produced a Yoga Nidra CD (Awaken and Dream) for use at home and while traveling. She has led many yogis into the world of teaching and advancing their practice over the years (since 2002), through the teacher training program at Movement Arts and other locations. In 2019 Kara completed a 300 hour certificate in Shamanic Energy Healing with Dr. Alberto Villoldo and the Four Winds School. She sees clients privately for Light Body sessions, leads ceremonies, teaches workshops, and hosts retreats in beautiful places. 2025 marks her 27th year of teaching yoga. Kara lives in Bellingham, Washington where she continues to study, practice and teach. She is currently co-teaching a 200 hour yoga teacher training at Movement Arts on Camano Island.
