Melissa Forbess interest in yoga became more singularly focused after finding inspiration in the tradition of scholar and yogi Shri T Krishnamacharya - Beginning in she had the opportunity to study directly with his student K Pattabhi Jois - and his son T K V Desikachar in Mysore and Madras India respectively Both Desikachar and Jois are credited with fueling the resurgence of Hatha Yoga in the Western hemisphere in recent decades Jois in particular was instrumental in popularizing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga from which the Power Yoga and Vinyasa Flow styles are derived Currently studying with Gary Kraftsow American Viniyoga Institute As an instructor Melissa Forbes began her career teaching Desikachar style yoga in She later became a co-founder and certified yoga instructor of the Heart of Yoga She also has taught yoga in numerous schools including the Olive Leaf Wholeness Center in New York City where she worked closely with Dr Rudolph Ballentine a student of Swami Rama founder of the Himalayan Institute From to Melissa Forbes had the privilege to travel with the Indian sage UG Krishnamurti - throughout the last five years of his life Painting and design along with dance and movement have always been her passion and preferred expression She received a BFA at Moore College of Art enjoyed a full scholarship in printmaking at the National Academy of Design and pursued an independent study of Vedic yantras/ mandalas She has received many awards including the Pollock-Krasner Grant Most recently Forbes vibrational yantra art was featured in the book Karttikeyan Yogic Method She currently teaches as an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Haven Connecticut In addition to her interests and experiences in yoga and art Melissa is a recent gradute of the Suluk Academy Sufi International Order and The Four Winds Society Light Body Training Formally studied Neuro-Linguistic Programming under Richard Bandler cofounder of NLP Shiatsu Certified Ohashiatsu Practitioner Certified Divine Intervention Teacher/Minister and Certified Teacher of Mayan Sacred Geometry She is the author of “No Teaching Yoga The Authentic Guide” a work reflecting her time with UG Krishnamurti a brief history of yoga a collection of Vedic Yantras and Melissas Eight Combination practices Published by wwwgatherinsightcom Most recent art exhibition have included: Way Back Gallery in Troy NY solo show Affirmation Arts in New York City NY solo show Union Arts Center in Sparkill NY solo show Continuum Movement Arts in New York City NY wwwmelissaforbesnet wwwforbesyantracom.
