Intermediate & Advanced Yoga

Intermediate and advanced yoga classes are designed for practitioners who have established a foundation—who know the basic poses, understand alignment principles, and can coordinate breath with movement. These classes introduce greater physical challenge, subtler techniques, and deeper dimensions of practice.

Beyond the Basics

Intermediate and advanced yoga classes are designed for practitioners who have established a foundation—who know the basic poses, understand alignment principles, and can coordinate breath with movement. These classes introduce greater physical challenge, subtler techniques, and deeper dimensions of practice.

But "advanced" in yoga doesn't simply mean more difficult poses. True advancement includes refinement of awareness, deeper breath practices, engagement with yoga philosophy, and increasingly subtle work with energy and attention. A practitioner doing simple poses with profound awareness may be more advanced than someone muscling into flashy shapes.

Intermediate vs. Advanced

  • Familiar with foundational poses and alignment
  • Can follow a flowing sequence without getting lost
  • Ready for some arm balances and inversions
  • Developing a consistent personal practice
  • Beginning to explore pranayama beyond basic breath
  • 1-2 years of regular practice (varies widely)

What Changes at Higher Levels

  • More challenging poses: Arm balances, deeper backbends, advanced inversions
  • Longer holds: Building strength and endurance in poses
  • Faster transitions: In vinyasa styles, more complex linking
  • Less instruction: Teachers assume you know the basics
  • Subtler refinement: Working with micro-adjustments and deeper alignment

Challenging Poses by Category

  • Intermediate: Crow (Bakasana), Side Crow, Eight-Angle Pose
  • Advanced: Firefly (Tittibhasana), Peacock (Mayurasana), Flying Crow

The Risks of Advancement

Advanced practice brings increased risk. Challenging poses place greater demands on the body, and enthusiasm can outpace readiness:

Many seasoned practitioners have injuries from pushing too hard in their earlier years. Patience now prevents problems later. There's no deadline for any pose.

Deepening Without Complication

  • Hold basic poses longer—five minutes in Pigeon reveals what five breaths cannot
  • Practice with closed eyes—removing visual cues heightens internal awareness
  • Attend to breath with precision—making each inhale and exhale a meditation
  • Cultivate equanimity—can you remain calm when sensation intensifies?
  • Explore the energetic dimension—where does energy move in each pose?

Finding the Right Level

How do you know if you're ready for more challenging classes? Consider these indicators:

When in doubt, ask a teacher you trust. They can assess your readiness more objectively than you can assess yourself.
